John is an EMDR trauma therapist and psychodynamically informed psychotherapist. He believes that much of present-day psychological pain is rooted in past traumatic experiences and attachment disruptions. When we experience trauma, memories of these events remain with us as unprocessed memories, affecting our moods, behaviors, sense of self, and our bodies. Often the key to healing is fully processing those experiences in order to feel like yourself again. John has helped many clients reprocess painful experiences using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to create impactful change in their lives, helping them gain insight into themselves and others. With EMDR, clients can approach these memories safely, allowing the mind to go where it needs to go in order to heal. Healing from trauma can be hard work, but John is with his clients every step of the way and will be able to provide skills and resources for overcoming painful experiences.
He also specializes in gender affirming therapy and therapy for LGBTQIA2SP+ clients. Some people have more difficulty navigating the social expectations of gender, sexuality and their own gender identity than others. John provides a calm and nonjudgmental space for his clients to consider and explore their gender identity and sexual orientation. If you’re someone considering medically transitioning in any way, John can also write a letter to your insurance conforming to WPATH’s Standards of Care 8 based on your ongoing therapy with him.
John strongly believes in bringing an intersectional lens into the therapy room to understand how our overlapping identities and oppressions shape our internal experiences. In any therapeutic relationship, our identities will overlap in some situations and diverge in others. John would love to hear your story and talk about how he can work with you to get you through whatever you’re struggling with today.
Prior to becoming a therapist, John was a public interest attorney. He holds a Master’s degree from Catholic University and is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW). He offers sessions in English to clients in Washington DC, in-person and virtually.

Theresa (“Tess”) is a culturally attuned perinatal therapist who specializes in supporting individuals and couples through the emotional and relational transitions of the perinatal period, from preconception through postpartum, and the evolving challenges of parenthood. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Tess Sherman has spent the past ten years living in the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America. She understands that each individual’s unique cultural background informs and colors their interactions with the world. Tess pays close attention to all aspects of identity and their role in the therapeutic process, including race, gender, sexuality, and physical ability, honoring each person’s ability to define their own experience. Tess’s person-centered approach helps her create a safe space for her clients that they feel motivated to return to week after week, one where they feel heard, understood, and accepted,
A lover of foreign languages, literature, and poetry, Tess is able to distill into words what is often difficult to articulate emotionally. She believes that the power to name our experiences on our own terms, using our own language, can be an effective tool for healing. Trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Internal Family Systems Therapy, Tess is apt at deciphering when a client will benefit from targeted tools and practical solutions or a slower, more emotionally responsive intervention. Whether you are seeking support navigating a difficult season, healing trauma, or building closer, more fulfilling ties with those around you, Tess will work diligently and collaboratively to ensure you achieve your therapeutic objectives.
Tess received her BA in Arabic and Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame and holds a Master’s in Counseling from the College of New Jersey. She also completed a Master’s program in Women’s Studies at the University of Jordan, writing her thesis on the role and significance of Jordanian midwives in national family health care initiatives. Although she conducts therapy exclusively in English, she also speaks Spanish, French, and Arabic. Soon to be licensed in Virginia, she currently sees both individuals and couples virtually in Washington, DC.

When I met Huma I was an adult revisiting some childhood traumas. I had been in counseling session at various times in my life and found Huma to be very different from other practitioners. Huma did more than listen, she provided strategies to assist me in and out of sessions. I am stronger as a result of the work I did with Huma.
